Customer Interviews No. 1

Fish hawk, Florida is a little community right outside of Tampa that has most everything you would find in a small city; grocery stores, banks, doctor offices, homes, parks, nature trails, water parks, some restaurants and so on. However, I often wonder to myself where all of the 'healthy' options are. Being a plant-based eater, I find it very difficult to find places to enjoy in this community that offer plant-based, vegan, healthy foods. It seems that unless I go to a grocery store myself and put some ingredients together, I am so out of luck. With this personal unmet need, I can't help but believe there may be others out there that would consider the restaurant options in this area as an unmet need for them as well. Whether one is Vegan, Vegetarian, or just wants some healthier options, I feel this is truly an unmet need in the Tampa bay area, particularly in the community of Fish hawk.
With this idea,  I spend sometime in the local park over the weekend, observing some active people enjoying the outdoors and time with their family. I interview five people to try and uncover if this truly is an unmet need in their area!

Fish Hawk Marathon

  • Do you prefer to go out to a restaurant to eat or cook at home? Why?
  • Where is your favorite place to eat in this area?
  • What makes the restaurant your favorite?

Reflection

I realized from this assignment and interviews that there are many who do crave healthier options in the community of Fish hawk. Many of the people I spoke with seemed to leave the community for better food options but wish they had more options in their area. Without specifically asking about a plant-based restaurant, I learned that people are open-minded in this area and want to be more health-conscious.

Reading Reflection | Week 4

The Entrepreneurial Mind-Set in Organizations- Corporate Entrepreneurship

Questions being answered regarding Chapter 3:

1) What was the biggest surprise for you in the reading? In other words, what did you read that stood out the most as different from your expectations?

2) Identify at least one part of the reading that was confusing to you.

3) If you were able to ask two questions to the author, what would you ask? Why?

4) Was there anything you think the author was wrong about? Where do you disagree with what she or he said? How?

1. In Chapter 3 "The Entrepreneurial Mind-Set in Organizations", there were many sections that stood out to me. I personally enjoyed the Rules for an Innovative Environment. The author goes through and explains the 10 rules for being innovative within organizations. Encourage action, using informal meetings whenever possible, tolerating failure, and putting people on small teams for future-oriented projects to name a few. I felt that these are great tips and very important aspects of being an Entrepreneur within a corporation.

2. I found this chapter to be very clear and concise. I really didn't have any section that was confusing to me. I enjoyed it!

3. If I were able to ask the author two questions:

  1. What motivated you to become an Entrepreneur?
  2. What types of ventures have you worked on in your experience?

I would ask these questions in order to hear the perspective of an intelligent writer and also to learn about the author's ventures that lead him to the place he is today.

4. I don't have anything in particular that I felt the author was wrong about. I really enjoyed this chapter on the Entrepreneurial mind-set in Organizations and enjoyed the authors explanations regarding developing a vision.

Top 5 World Problems | Health Issues

Google Images

1. Disease

Cancer, diabetes, digestive issues, sexual transmitted infections, and so on.

I feel that most every one carries a cancer gene in some form or the other. However, I strongly believe it is the environmental factors (things we do) that can turn on and off cancer. Diabetes (type-2) is nearly 100% preventable. A person's diet and personal decisions significantly affects the longevity and quality of their life. Sexually transmitted infections are another part to this topic. The most implementable solution is not falling into the habitual hookup lifestyle that seems to be the norm.

2. Obesity

"Most people have no idea how good their body is designed to feel." This I feel is a major issue in the world, more specifically in North America. The majority of people are living with various health issues that are caused/contributed to by obesity. I feel a practical solution that would at least contribute to helping this issue is educating people. I believe that schools should definitely teach children the importance of overall wellness from a early on. I also am a believer in the saying, "let food be thy medicine, and let medicine be thy food". The world would be much more happy and healthy place if people understood how to implement this, and the importance of taking care of themselves.

3. FDA (Federal Department of Agriculture)

I feel that people put way too much trust into the FDA. Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) foods are deemed as "safe"by the FDA, however, numerous studies have shown otherwise. Among the other chemicals, preservatives, hormones/antibiotics included in processed foods, there is no way any of these aspects are good for the human body. Other continents, such as Europe from example, prohibit the use of many food ingredients that the FDA approves in America.

4. Pharmaceutical Industry

I believe that finding the root cause of a health related problem is the first step to truly healing. While I definitely believe prescription medication can be lifesaving in certain situations, most of the time prescription drugs treat one’s symptoms, rather than truly correcting the problem. Not to mention all of the side effects that come along with them. I think people should take preventative measures, such as taking care of their health by eating a plant-based diet and exercising.

5. People's Lack of Self Control

Many things come to mind for this one, but I will just name a few things. This not only ties into obesity, and general health issues, but it also goes along with why the world has criminals. People's lack of self control with food causes various diseases. People who lack self control while shopping may be inclined to steal. Lack of self control with alcohol, drugs, etc lead to numerous issues as well.
Although I don't believe there is a "fix all" for this issue, among other things, I do believe that everyone should meditate. Meditation helps literally everything, and certainly contributes to mindfulness, which I feel is linked to self control.

Obviously this topic is highly controversial. Everyone seems to form their own opinions on what the world's biggest problems are; terrorism, disease, famine, hunger, global warming, war, debt, etc. I wanted to spend some time discussing 5 problems that I feel are some real world problems people face, and also what I feel would be a practical. implementable solution to the issue.

Reading Reflection | Week 3

Week 3:

The Entrepreneurial Mind-Set in Individuals

Questions being answered regarding Chapter 1:

1) What was the biggest surprise for you in the reading? In other words, what did you read that stood out the most as different from your expectations?

2) Identify at least one part of the reading that was confusing to you.

3) If you were able to ask two questions to the author, what would you ask? Why?

4) Was there anything you think the author was wrong about? Where do you disagree with what she or he said? How?

1. In Chapter 2 "The Entrepreneurial Mind-Set in Individuals", there were many sections that stood out to me. I personally enjoyed this chapter very much as it was enlightening. The author discusses all of the risks that are involved while pursuing being an Entrepreneur. I found that this section stood out as it explained the financial, career, family, social, and psychic risk that comes along with being an Entrepreneur that many may not consider.

I really enjoyed this chapter on the Entrepreneurial mind-set and do agree with the authors perspective on this.

Identifying Local Opportunities | Recent Events

Week 3

1. Title: Editorial: You should be able to cross the street without fearing for your life

This story stood out to me as pedestrians truly do get hit by cars often. This seems to have become more apparent locally over recent years. This article discusses the poorly designs that numerous roads have that contributes to pedestrian deaths and injuries, specifically on Hillsborough County roads. I can definitely associate this local issue as an unmet need, considering what seems like everyday, the local news has a story on a pedestrian who was struck by a vehicle. Not only is this a local issue, but this could be a problem for any person who has to commute by foot on a poorly designed road. I feel that some sort of national regulation that would provide a safer environment should be implemented in order to give people a sense of safety when crossing the road.

2. Title: FBI Seeking Assistance To Identify Victims In International Sextortion Case

According to an article in the Osprey Observer, “The FBI has countless open sextortion investigations across the country that involve both subjects and victims from around the world”. The FBI is searching for assistance in these types of cases. It also discusses how investigators obtain information from the victim's computers. I feel like the FBI could benefit from advancements in cyber security.

Check it out at http://www.ospreyobserver.com/2015/10/fbi-seeking-assistance-to-identify-victims-in-international-sextortion-case/

3. Title: STD rates skyrocket in Hillsborough County

The Hillsborough County Health Department is having an issue with the increase of sexually transmitted diseases in recent years. The article discusses how the lack of good sex education is partly the reason this has become so common. I do see how that can be a factor and I certainly feel that sexual education is an unmet need in high schools.
Feel free to read more about this issue:

http://www.tbo.com/health/medical-news/number-of-sexually-transmitted-diseases-rising-in-florida-hillsborough-20140816/

4. Title: Coke To Pop Open New Ad Campaign

First off, I will start by saying that in no way is any soda product is healthy for consumption. This specific article discusses the decline in soda sales in the United States. I personally find this to be a wonderful thing, however, Coke isn't too happy. I think Coca-Cola Co in generally is a unmet need in society, as backwards that may sound. Perhaps if they created different, healthier products in their future they could reach a new marketing strategy that contributes to the health of individuals,
If you're interested in Coca-Cola Company's new ad campaign:

5. Title: Consumer Wise: What's worth the cost of buying organic?

This article discusses an issue consumers have when buying produce. Organic produce is of course the best way to buy fruits and vegetables, however, the prices may not always be comparable in the local grocery stores. This article really makes me think about the unmet need consumers have; not having fresh, organic produce available for reasonable pricing, specifically in this part of the country. It also lists the "dirty dozen" foods that are most susceptible to pesticide residue, along with the "clean 15" foods that may not be worth the extra cost if one cannot afford to buy all organic. It is certainly an unmet need in my world, A good read if interested:

World's Biggest Problems | My Top 10

Week 3:

My Take On Some of the Words Biggest Problems

Google Images

Obviously this topic is highly controversial. Everyone seems to form their own opinions on what the world's biggest problems are; terrorism, disease, famine, hunger, global warming, war, debt, etc. I wanted to spend some time discussing 10 problems that I feel are some real world problems people face, and also what I feel would be a practical. implementable solution to the issue.

3. Alcohol Abuse

First, alcohol is terrible for the body, as it depletes and ages the body. Also, it is addicting and should not be habitual. While I don't think it's terrible to have some form of alcohol once in awhile, I do believe alcohol is a world issue. Not only does it destroy many lives, whether it is being abused by a family member, caused death of a loved one in an accident, or contributed to bad decision making in general, I certainly feel that alcohol is majorly abused, particular in the United States. I think an implementable solution for this that could help the issue is again, educating for all ages and also, focusing more on not giving alcohol a good reputation would be a good start. Turning 21 is most people's favorite birthday; it seems to be known as the "fun" thing to do. I feel that many teens and college kids get wrapped into partying because they think it's the thing to do.

4. War And Terrorism

Why can't we just have world peace?... But really, I understand this is a very complicated topic, however, I definitely felt this one should be included on the topic of, "World's Biggest Problems".

7.  Politics

Politics causes many of the issues in the world.  It always seems to be about left or right, republican or democrat... This contributes to hate, bitterness, arguing, etc... I think politicians should work together to be practical, and implement better solutions.

8. Too Much Government Control

Although I do believe it is necessary to have some Government control for obvious reasons, I do feel the system could be more efficient and effective.I think this causes people to rebel.

9. The Media

The majority of what people hear on the media is very misleading. It causes false perceptions that lead to other issues. I feel that the media should be more open, and not one sided when discussing issues and events. The media is a huge part of why people have formed so many opinions, that are most of the time not even accurate.

10. People's Lack of Self Control

Many things come to mind for this one, but I will just name a few things. This not only ties into obesity, and general health issues, but it also goes along with why the world has criminals. People's lack of self control with food causes various diseases. People who lack self control while shopping may be inclined to steal. Although I don't believe there is a "fix all" for this issue, among other things, I do believe that everyone should meditate. Meditation helps literally everything, and certainly contributes to mindfulness, which I feel is linked to self control.

Bug List | 20 Things That Truly Bug Me

Week 2:

Bug List

Here is a list of 20 things that truly “bug” me.
Most are health related as it is a passion of mine, and it is just the way my brain works.

1. The fact that foods don’t HAVE to be labeled GMO (genetically modified organisms).

In other Continents, such as Europe for instance, it is mandatory for food companies to label it. Among other terrible things put in foods, (artificial coloring, unhealthy preservatives…) I feel this one should truly be known.

2. Organic Produce being so expensive in local grocery stores.

States out west, and other countries around the globe eat fresh, organic produce the way most Americans eat conventional. Florida is very much behind when it comes to wellness.

3. Prescription drugs.

4. The Majority of Medical Doctors.

This one is for a lot of the same reasons I mentioned under prescription drugs. The majority of medical doctors tend to ignore the underlying ailment which does not contribute to overall healing.

5. Artificial sweeteners.

I feel that it is a common misconception that artificial sweeteners are healthier than sugar. Studies have shown the complete opposite and it is one of the worst things people can consume. I remember when I was back in high school, my grandfather (who was type 2 Diabetic) would literally get a spike in his blood sugar after consuming “Sugar Free” desserts. I always thought that was interesting, so I did my research and apparently that isn’t uncommon.

6. The school system (elementary schools-high school).

I feel that schools should teach their students more about overall wellness, fitness, and nutrition early on. Meditation and mindfulness are also important. I think teaching kids these things from a young age could solve, or at least significantly reduce negative conditions in children and enable them to have a base understanding of why it is so important to make healthy choices.

7. Animal Cruelty.

This particular one isn’t because I am an animal lover (which I really am) but it has a lot to do with the way most farm animals are raised/treated. The antibiotics and hormones injected in farm animal is in no way healthy for human consumption. I am not suggesting that every single person on the planet should be a vegan/vegetarian by any means, although I certainly believe that eating a plant-based diet is the most healing, especially for the digestive system, but I think that conditions should be better for these farm animals, considering the stress the animals experience also effects the quality of the food.

8. Wearing shoes inside at home.

I am somewhat of a germaphobe, which may be why this came up. However, I really don’t like the idea of wearing the same shoes that I wore in a public restroom, all over my home. Not sanitary!

9. Alcoholism.

I can relate to this personally, growing up knowing someone close to me suffer from this awful disease. I honestly don’t think people realize the seriousness of alcoholism. Drinking is a social activity that has basically become the norm. Whether it is a weekend thing, or if one parties often (Yes, the majority of college kids) it starts becoming habitual. First off, alcohol is terrible for the body, as it literally depletes and ages the body. Also, it is addicting. This is just my perspective.

10. Obamacare.

Do I really need to go into detail about this one? I will just say that it is not my favorite form of health care our nation has experimented with.

11. Non-Cleanliness.

Something that bothers me is people who don’t take care of themselves and their belongings. Please bathe often, and brush/floss thoroughly. Do it for yourself and for your health.

12. Fast-food Chains.

The quality of these foods are typically very poor, if they can even classify as real foods. I just would like to see home healthier, plant-based food places. It would be great to have that convenience of fast food and low prices, while also getting some nutrition in your meal.

13. Cigarette smoking, especially in public.

We all know how unhealthy smoking is. Not only an air pollutant but one of the least pleasant smells to me is walking by somebody who has a cigarette in their hand.

14. Littering.

Seeing trash on the side of the road is not only a horrible sight, but it is terrible for the environment. It is just as simply and easy to throw trash away in a garbage can.

15. Smoothie places.

Some, not all. I dislike discovering places that use syrup and artificial mixes while claiming to be healthy. Some people mistakenly will consume one of these, thinking they made a healthy choice, when really it is contributing to various health issues. I believe smoothie places should only contain whole foods and healthy ingredients.

16. Juice Bar’s that don’t juice organic vegetables.

During the juice process, you are literally extracting everything in the veggie/fruit minus the fiber. I don’t understand why anyone would want to drink, (what is suppose to be) a very nutritious drink, that is full of chemicals/pesticides.

17. Supplements.

Most of the time, supplement companies aren’t regulated, and therefore, consumers have no idea what they are putting in their bodies. Plus, many of these companies use synthetic ingredients that can cause upset stomach and interact with people’s medications.

18. Food Nutrition Labels.

I find that nutrition labels can be very misleading. When looking at the label, some people don’t realize that the amount of calories, sugar, etc. shown, a lot of times is only a fraction of what is in the full food item. If you don’t already, make sure to check the serving size and how many servings the label says. Than multiply that by how much sugar and calories the nutrition label says to get more accurate numbers.

19. Inconsiderate people.

Whether it be rude drivers who tailgate, cut others off, or just people who go into a restaurant/store and are naturally inconsiderate of others. The world would be a better place if people were simply more mindful and considerate.

20. Liars.

Nothing good comes out of lying, it is damaging for everyone involved, especially the person lying. I never could understand why people lie about the little things. Nobody is perfect, yet people seem the need to make themselves seem like they need to come across that way. Just be honest. I value real, genuine people.

Reflection:
I actually really did enjoy this assignment. It forced me to give more thought to many of the things that bother me and why they do. It also felt like a release as far as getting to vent and put my thoughts into words. I hope that at least some of the things listed here are helpful to someone in their life as well.

Reading Reflection | Week 2

Week 2:

Entrepreneurship: Evolutionary Development - Revolutionary Impact

Questions being answered regarding Chapter 1:
  • 1) What was the biggest surprise for you in the reading? In other words, what did you read that stood out the most as different from your expectations?

  • 2) Identify at least one part of the reading that was confusing to you.

  • 3) If you were able to ask two questions to the author, what would you ask? Why?

  • 4) Was there anything you think the author was wrong about? Where do you disagree with what she or he said? How?

1. During my time reading Chapter 1, "Entrepreneurship: Evolutionary Development - Revolutionary Impact", there were many aspects within the reading that stood out to me. I love the way the author explains entrepreneurs as being agents of change and heroes of free enterprise. This statement, "entrepreneurs serve as agents of change; they provide creativity, innovative ideas for business enterprises; and they help businesses grow and become profitable" truly stood out and enabled me to think about a whole new perspective on the concept of being an Entrepreneur. I certainly believe this quote to be true. Another surprise that stood out to me was some of the myths associated with Entrepreneurship.

I feel that the "Myth 7:  All Entrepreneurs need is luck "section could not be more accurate. I was inspired by the quote, "luck happens when preparation meets opportunity". I completely agree with this statement and believe that it is much more than luck - it is a combination of preparation, desire, determination, knowledge, and innovativeness that makes an Entrepreneur successful.

2. The most confusing part of the reading to me was the schools of entrepreneurial thought approach. The macro and micro view makes sense, but I was unsure about some of the context within those sections.

3. If I were able to ask the author two questions:

  • How did you learn so much about Entrepreneurial Schools-of-Thought Approach?
  • What types of ventures have you worked on in your experience?

I would ask these questions in order to have a better understanding of the Entrepreneurial Schools-of-Thought Approach and how they were determined, and also to learn about the author's ventures that lead him to the place he is today.

4. I don't have anything in particular that I felt the author was wrong about. I really enjoyed the "myths" associated with Entrepreneurship and very much agree with the authors perspective on these.

Entrepreneur's Mantra

Week 2:

Entrepreneur's Mantra

"Entrepreneurs don't wait. They Act. And they don't quit. Entrepreneurs fail. A lot. But in this forge of failure, entrepreneurs sharpen their edge, ready to face the future. Entrepreneurs thirst for negative feedback. Too much praise leads to complacency. while criticism provides clues to improve. Entrepreneurs work harder. To pursue their own lives. To improve the world around them. To build a better future for themselves, their families, and communities. I am an entrepreneur."
